정장선 평택시장은 3월14일 집무실에서 앤드류 해리슨(중장) 유엔군사령부(UNC) 부사령관과 지역사회 협력증진 방안을 논의했다.

해리슨 부사령관은 앞서 2021년 12월 취임했다.

이 자리에서 해리슨 부사령관은 “전임 메이어 사령관에게 유엔군사령부와 평택시가 그동안 긴밀한 공조 아래 코로나19 극복 및 시민들과 상생협력을 위해 다양한 노력을 기울인 점을 잘알고 있다. 앞으로 우호적인 관계를 지속적으로 발전시켜 나가길 희망한다”고 밝혔다.

이에 정장선 시장은 “미군기지 평택이전과 함께 새롭게 시작된 주한미군 평택시대를 맞아 유엔사령부와 다양한 분야에서 협력은 매우 중요하다. 코로나19를 극복하고 함께 공존하며 화합하는 분위기 조성이 무엇보다 중요하다” 며 현재 평택시가 추진하는 도시개발계획 전반을 설명한 뒤 “새롭게 만들어 지는 평택시의 청사진은 매우 밝다”고 말했다.

아울러 정장선 시장은 “평택시가 지난해부터 굿네이버 사업으로 진행하는 세계문화 주간 행사에 영국도 참여를 희망한다”고 말하자 해리슨 부사령관은 “유엔군사령부가 도울 수 있는 최대한 범위에서 적극 지원하겠다. 시민들과 영국문화 공유도 양국간 우호증진에 굉장히 큰 의미가 있다”고 밝혔다.
