The bereaved families of Smith's special mission unit veterans, who were fiercely oxidized during the Korean War, suggested, "Please upgrade the 'U.N. Troop Memorial and Memorial Ceremony for Smith's fallen soldiers' to a state-led event."

Four bereaved families of veterans who attended the early war ceremony on July 5 at the invitation of Osan Mayor Lee Kwon-jae to mark the 70th anniversary of the Korea-U.S. alliance and armistice agreement wrote a proposal to Minister of Patriots and Veterans Affairs Park Min-sik and left it to Osan City.

The city forwarded the proposal to the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs.

The bereaved family of the Smith unit who participated in the proposal was ¡ã Susan Perry (1937, female), who was the commander of the 52nd Artillery Battalion at the time. General Perry's daughter) ¡ã Lisa Shawl (1959, female, daughter of Norman Forsnes, then a private), ¡ã Richard Holbrock (1968, male, nephew of Alfred C., then a private and prisoner of war), and her spouse (1967 female).

"The Smith unit participated in the Korean War to protect peace and freedom in the Republic of Korea," they said in a proposal. "Please hold a memorial service to honor the sacrifices of veterans and pray for peace led by the Korean government."

In particular, first lady Susan Perry said in an interview with the media, "I hope that the Battle of Jukmiryeong, the first battle of the U.S. military during the Korean War, will not be forgotten in Koreans' memory."

The move is aimed at allowing all Koreans to remember the Battle of Osan Jukmiryeong, symbolized as the starting point of the Korea-U.S. alliance, as President Yoon Suk Yeol and U.S. President Biden adopted the Washington Declaration at the Korea-U.S. summit in April this year.

Mayor Lee Kwon-jae said, "Jukmiryeong, where the U.S. military participated for the first time as a U.N. force during the Korean War, is a symbol of the Korea-U.S. alliance." Not only the city but also the bereaved families of the veterans hope that the history will not be forgotten, he said. "I sincerely ask Minister Park Min-sik and the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs to take a good look at the meaning of the proposal delivered by the bereaved families of the veterans."
