6.25한국전쟁에서 장렬히 산화한 스미스 특수임무부대 참전용사 유족들이 “‘유엔군 초전기념 및 스미스부대 전몰장병 추도식(이하 초전 기념식)’을 국가가 주도하는 행사로 격상해 달라”고 건의했다.

한·미 동맹 및 정전협정 70주년을 맞아 이권재 오산시장 초청으로 앞서 7월5일 초전 기념식에 참석한 참전용사 유족 4명은 박민식 국가보훈부 장관에게 이런 내용을 담은 건의서를 작성해 오산시에 맡겼다.

시는 이 건의서를 국가보훈부로 전달했다.

건의서에 참여한 스미스부대 유족은 ▲수잔 페리(1937·여, 당시 52포병 대대장이던 밀러 O. 페리 장군의 딸) ▲리사 숄(1959·여, 당시 상병이던 노먼 포스네스의 딸) ▲리차드 홀브록(1968·남, 당시 이병이면서 전쟁포로로 사망한 알프레드 C의 조카)와 배우자(1967·여) 등 4명이다.

이들은 건의서를 통해 “스미스 부대는 대한민국 평화와 자유를 수호하기 위해 한국전쟁에 참전했다” 며 “대한민국 정부 주도로 참전용사들의 희생을 기리고 평화를 기원하는 추도식을 개최해 달라”고 밝혔다.

특히 수잔 페리 여사는 언론과 인터뷰에서 “한국전쟁 당시 미군의 첫 전투였던 죽미령 전투가 한국인들 기억에서 잊혀지지 않기를 바란다” 며 “지금까지 자치단체(오산시) 차원에서 개최한 추도식이 국가 차원의 기념행사가 될 수 있기를 희망한다”고 강조했다.

한·미 동맹이 70주년을 맞고 올해 4월 한·미 정상회담에서 윤석열 대통령과 바이든 미국 대통령이 ‘워싱턴 선언’을 채택하며 한·미 동맹이 더욱 굳건해진 가운데 ‘한·미 동맹의 시작점’으로 상징되는 오산 죽미령 전투를 대한민국 국민 모두가 기억할 수 있도록 하자는 취지다.

이권재 시장은 “6.25전쟁 당시 유엔군으로 미군이 첫 참전한 죽미령은 한·미 동맹의 상징과도 같은 곳이다. 시는 물론 참전 유족들도 그 역사가 잊혀지지 않기를 바라고 있다” 며 “참전용사 유족들이 전달한 이 건의서 의미를 박민식 장관을 비롯한 보훈부 차원에서 잘 살펴주기를 간곡히 요청한다”고 밝혔다.

In particular, first lady Susan Perry said in an interview with the media, "I hope that the Battle of Jukmiryeong, the first battle of the U.S. military during the Korean War, will not be forgotten in Koreans' memory."

The move is aimed at allowing all Koreans to remember the Battle of Osan Jukmiryeong, symbolized as the starting point of the Korea-U.S. alliance, as President Yoon Suk Yeol and U.S. President Biden adopted the Washington Declaration at the Korea-U.S. summit in April this year.

Mayor Lee Kwon-jae said, "Jukmiryeong, where the U.S. military participated for the first time as a U.N. force during the Korean War, is a symbol of the Korea-U.S. alliance." Not only the city but also the bereaved families of the veterans hope that the history will not be forgotten, he said. "I sincerely ask Minister Park Min-sik and the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs to take a good look at the meaning of the proposal delivered by the bereaved families of the veterans."
